Professor Taekyun, Hur’s book, “Being Sound of Mind Often” says that we misunderstand others in many cases.
Men’s minds are not easily read. That’s why we have many misunderstands.
Charles Swindoll says, ‘misunderstanding makes wrong family than certified truth and relies on easily changeable feeling than consciousness, that result in wrong direction’.
It is not easy to understand people. We confront many kinds of misunderstanding.
Now, the Jews misunderstood Paul that it made him in trouble. Without misunderstanding, we can’t get God’s work.
How can we solve our misunderstanding?
1. We must know that misunderstanding is not strange.
Charles Spurgeon says that we confront many misunderstandings while we don’t work wrong.
The Jews on the passage misunderstood Paul. But they welcomed him at the first time(v.17). But the following day, they misunderstood about Paul’s sermon for circumcision. Actually, Paul emphasized salvation, but they thought wrong that they made importance about circumcision than salvation.
Lauren Slator introduces in his book, ‘Opening Skinner’s box’, that people misunderstand according to the teacher’s speech. It means that students are influenced by how the teacher says. Remember that we get what we want than others. So, be cautious that transferring through mouth should be very cautious.
The Jews did not like Paul that made them misunderstood. It tells us that misunderstanding is inevitable. Do not be suffocated due to the misunderstanding. It is not strange.
2. We must be other’s situation to get over misunderstanding.
We can get misunderstood anywhere. Have you ever been understood? We can frustrate because of its effects, but worse results comes from transferring the misunderstanding to others. Paul was in the same situation. Because the Jews misunderstood Paul, James and elders told Paul to do purification ceremony.
v.24 - [Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everybody will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law.]
James and some elders told Paul to do in order to solve the misunderstanding. And he did what they wanted on the v.26.
1Cor9:19 - [Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.]
What Paul thought was that people’s thinking was more important. That’s why Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. (v.26)
Among misunderstanding, we have to know that if we can stand other people’s situation, the misunderstanding will be solved.
3. We must look up God’s understanding among our misunderstanding.
Even though trying to solve misunderstanding, but the other problem happened to Paul.
v.27~28 [When the seven days were nearly over, some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him, shouting, "Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple area and defiled this holy place.”]
It was not true! Because they disliked Paul, they misunderstood him. We should be cautious not to give critical misunderstanding. Trifle misunderstanding is not big deal, but sometimes it can kill others as the Jews did to Paul. Without Roman soldiers, Paul would be killed by them. If Paul was killed by the Jews, how would it be in the mission history? But God’s understanding covered this problem.
Charles Spurgeon got misunderstanding while working in the church and decided to quit his work. When he visited people, the ox stretched their necks to look over out. He asked to the owner why they did. He got answered that they couldn’t do anything without seeing out. He understood that he should seek only God’s guidance. ‘Instruction through the ox’
Even though you get misunderstood, do not give up for great mission.
